In my last semester at Eastman, we had a special guest with us - Alida Fabris, a harpist from Europe! Although she is from Italy, she has gone to school and traveled all over the continent. She told me all about her unique (well, unique to us Americans) educational experiences and the orchestral auditions she has coming up.

<p>Alida’s goal is to be an orchestral harpist. While she was at Eastman I got to hear her play lots of orchestra excerpts, and they were definitely some of the best I’ve ever heard. I asked her what inspired her passion for orchestra, and she said, “I had a really good experience with orchestra when I was very young. It was a little youth orchestra from a village, but we actually played a lot. Every two weeks we had rehearsal, and it was kind of tough because we had to drive two hours there. And then there were concerts, and we also did tours in Italy. Some of my best friends are still from this orchestra.” She also mentioned having a great experience playing with a harp ensemble in Italy called Ventaglio d'Arpe. More recently, Alida got to play harp at La Scala - the famous opera house in Milan - as one of the six harpists in Wagner’s Siegfried! Alida says she would like to go back to Italy eventually, but there are currently no orchestra jobs there. For now, she says, she will go anywhere in Europe for a job. </p>
<p>This fall Alida will go back to the Swedish National Orchestra Academy. She has more auditions coming up, as well as a week of trial concerts with the London Philharmonia in October! Good luck, Alida!!</p>
